Abstract

|
Authors attempted a study concerned to the antibiotic activity of the fruit extracts of Punica granatum to investigate a certain possibility of a new antibacterial agent from plant and obtained following results: 1. On the screening procedure, the boiling water extract revealed remarkable clear zone of inhibition to
the growths of staphylococcus aureus and escherichia coli.
2. Among the five fractional extracts, P3 fraction which is ethyl ether insoluble portion of the ethanol extract showed the most strong antibacterial activity to staphylococcus aureus and escherichia coli.
3. Several dilutions of the Pa fraction also markedly inhibited the growth of staphylococcus aureus, salmonella typhi, shigella flexneri, cholera vibrio and mycobacterium tuberculosis at 1:320 dilutions and escherichia coli at 1:80 dilutions.
